Tuesday November 19: St. Augustine

Yesterday we were up early at Jekyll Island and ready to go at 7 am.

St. Andrew Sound is the first large body of water we needed to cross and when the ocean wants IN an inlet and the current wants OUT the same inlet, it's not a nice place to be! Hence the 7 am depart time.

But the fog got us again and it wasn't until 9 that we finally left. As we sat at the dock waiting, there were suddenly 5 boats that passed by the marina and were headed out. Then another 6 went by - we need to join in on this flotilla in the fog. Surely we could keep someone in view, right?

Not so much! By the time we were a mile out into the sound, we could see NO ONE ahead nor behind us. We continued ahead, went out of the "suggest route" and cut a mile off of our route. Steve stood watch on the bow and blew our fog horn (translated to air horn) every minute to warn any nearby boats of our presence. We could hear a boat's horn in front of us and could see the wake as well. Again just disconcerting to use the GPS for navigation with no landmarks. Everyone was going very slow so no issues really with running into anyone.

Kinda of a ho-hum day the rest of the 36 miles to FLORIDA!!! We passed the submarine base at King's Bay.

Sadly no submarine headed out to sea but we did pick out the two escort vessels that are used when a sub does go out.

Saw both in action last fall when we traveled through this same area.

Last night at Amelia Island, we finally caught up with Werner and Kathy (It's About Time) - we had met last April at the MTOA rendezvous.

It was nice to see them again and fun to catch up. They spent the summer traveling to Maine - thoroughly enjoyed it and want to go back.

They are thinking of going through Lake Okeechobee also so maybe we'll travel with them some of the time.

Up early again this morning to make a 60 mile run to St. Augustine. Sunrise and breakfast on the go this morning again. A great start to a good day :-)

I continue to be reminded not to boat where the birds are standing ... no issues today though as we traveled almost all day with high water.

The white pelicans seem to really like this northern Florida area as we seem lots of them up here in this area but very few in the Keys. Guess they fly only as far south as they need to! The best is when we saw them flying in large flocks as the black wing tips are visible only when they fly.

Lots of them sitting along the shoreline the last couple of days.

And trees full of great white herons along the waterway.

And of course we are now in the land of the "I've really got a lot of money" folks that like their houses large!!

The farther south we move the more we'll see of the crazy large who needs this much space homes :-)

Weirdest thing Steve spotted today? The front end of a ship sitting in a shipyard! Guess there is no sense in wasting a perfectly good front end ... just stick it on another ship and good to go :-)

Tomorrow: Jim and Linda Murray (Selah and Symmetry II) are driving back to Edisto, SC and will stop on their way for lunch.

It'll be great to see them again! We'll stay another night here in St. Augustine. Time for a rest :-)
