Wednesday September 15: Grand Haven

Today was a short travel day of 31 miles instead of the expected longer day as we were looking for someplace that would be good for a couple of days - the weather is high winds/waves for tomorrow. So we settled on Grand Haven.
As we left Whitehall this morning (early!) the cool water and warmer air produced the mist over the water as we left. The flybridge was as wet as if it had rained! Dodging the fisherpeople this morning was interesting - as it has been for the last few days. The coho salmon are returning to the rivers to spawn and the harbors we have been in lately are all entrances to rivers. It really is crazy how many fishing boats are trolling in the harborways! We haven't seen a salmon caught yet though.
It was only in the 40's this morning so it was a cool ride for the 4 hour trip down the lake but a beautiful day once we arrived in Grand Haven. This is the lighthouse on the harbor entrance and Steve spotted the leaves starting to change on this tree on the way in - we REALLY need to get south :-)
There is a bike/walking trail that is right in front of the dock so we rode it back out to the lighthouse at the pier entrance. Steve was waiting for the guys there to catch a salmon but all that was being caught were whitefish. But there was a nice Coast Guard Memorial and display on the way there. Grand Haven is the largest CG bases on Lake Michigan. The city has really made a commitment to its waterfront area.
Maritime museum tomorrow (or not). Maybe a work day for wallpaper as it is due to rain much of the day.
