Saturday September 11: Acadia

Yesterday was a fabulous day to travel - sun was shining, puffy clouds blew at 5 mph from the NE - which gave us a trailing wind for a change - and 1 foot waves if that. Average speed was 8.5 mph for the day! After breakfast and a goodbye to the lady that runs the place we headed out of Northport about 9 am. We were dragging our feet a bit to give the waves at the top of Grand Traverse Bay a chance to lay down before heading out. Made it to Frankfort and our mail pickup. Talk about a small town: Steve went to the post office as soon as we arrived at 4:40 hoping it was open but it closed at 4 pm. But he heard voices in the back and was able to get someone's attention and they found our mail for him! I know lots of places THAT wouldn't happen :-) What a wonderful day! The first nice travel day in probably 3 weeks. Lake Michigan is very different than Lake Erie as the east shoreline in this area seem to all have sand dunes. The Sleeping Bear National Seashore Park is a part of this region and has dunes that are up to 490 feet tall. The pictures really don't do justice of course. There were more boats moving yesterday than we have seen on the lake so far! Seems everyone was waiting for the weather to break. The map gives you some idea of how far we were able to travel yesterday (almost 70 miles) and then today - another story. We left bright and early and quickly decided that it was blowing so hard we were done for the day so we pulled into Arcadia - a short 10 miles from Frankfort. It looks now like an all day rain so Steve is working on his floor again and I am off to hoist the TV antennae to see if I can pick today's college games (Michigan vs Notre Dame - maybe??) But this is a pleasant little place - not really a town to speak of but a nice study dock :-) The nice part of making it to Frankfort is the ports are very close together from here on out so if even part of a day is nice we can continue to move toward Chicago.
