Wednesday July 9: Back to Lakefield

After Symmetry left Monday morning, it was time for some work. We were staying at Buckhorn another night as there was no hurry for us to move on.

The cover over the stove top needed replaced for the past two years but somehow there was never time to cut the plastic material we bought in Cleveland last year to the right size.

Steve decided it was high time!

After some careful measurements (our well ingrained rule - measure twice, cut once - once again paid off. Guess how that became a rule ...). Steve's cut of the material was perfect! Let's hear it for the multi-tool, once again!

The end result was a much nicer looking cover for the stove burners. The old clear plastic was cracked and warped.

Nice job, Steve!!

It was just not a nice day. Storm clouds all around the area and rain threatening most of the day although it never did rain much. Quite cool though. Not sure what is going on with the weather.

In the end it was a pleasant, relaxing day with the puffy white cloud afternoon that seems to be the norm up here most days.

There was soup to be made though. Steve had already soaked the beans for the required 24 hours. Using the picnic table as a cover from the rain, the large pot on the small propane burner looked a bit shaky - but it worked fine and didn't tip so all was good :-) And so was the soup!

Tuesday was a gorgeous day - no wind and a bit of sun. Still cool but driving from the flybridge was enjoyable.

Destination? A short 6 miles across Lower Buckhorn Lake to Lovesick Lock. Fishing was in the plan of course!

After we were in and settled at the top of the lock, the rain started but not before Steve managed to get an hour or so of fishing in.

There is so much water in the system this year as heavy rain just seems to continue to come every week or so. Last night was no exception as the storm that went through came with heavy rains and gusty winds.

It's so nice to have a boat that doesn't leak - which hasn't always been the case!

A very nice sized water snake decided it liked the warmth of the concrete next to the boat. It didn't hang around long though - definitely camera shy.

The loons continue to be more populous on the waterway than in the past. Steve caught this one as it was flapping it's wings.

We're worried about the loons nesting at Young's Point though. The eggs have not yet hatched but we've seen quite a few baby loons along the way. Hope all is well.

We'll check again as we head back to Stony Lake for a couple of days.

For now, Lakefield Marina is a good place to be for a couple of days. The nights are unseasonably cold so being plugged in we can run the heater at night - and we have internet on the boat! Can't beat the combination :-)

Funnest thing spotted today? The giant mosquito on the roof the of the restaurant at Young's Point - life size :-)
