Monday July 16: Lakefield

Our last day at Campbellford was spent finishing up the flybridge cover. I didn't expect to have electricity again for the sewing machine until - not sure when! The inverter provides us what we need to recharge computers and phones (and watch movies with the DVD player) but doesn't provide enough to the sewing machine.

Steve's projects for the day included securing a catch-all basket under the aft deck and the biggest project of fixing the hatch hold up rods. The parts were plastic and over time just gave up! He did a great job - improvising as needed. Good job done on a #1 priority project :-)

Completed flybridge cover at right. All we need now is a nice post to hold it up in the center. Still looking for that.

Friday night was dinner out with a couple from Texas/Detroit and then off to the local theater for a showing of the new Spiderman. It was pretty good - I liked this new spiderman much better.

We left Campbellford on Friday morning and traveled the 25 miles and 6 locks to Hastings (at the east end of Rice Lake). Sunday to Peterborough and then on to Lakefield on Monday.

Of course breakfast out in Hastings. Cute little town - LOTS of folks fishing. It is very hot. Our goal is always to find the spot at the lock wall that will provide the earliest shade of the afternoon! Wouldn't think it would be that hard, would you? After all, the sun sets in the west. Some days we just don't do well :-(

The sun stayed behind clouds a good part of the day so before we left Hastings, Guppy finally got a washing. It was pretty bad that we hadn't had/made the time to wash the boat until now.

Much better .....

It was a long run across Rice Lake of 20 miles. I love that we can cruise again! When we could see the fountain in the small lake by Peterborough we new we were closing in on our destination.

Change of plans though - we were making such good time getting through the locks, we decided to keep going. Ended up traveling 45 miles to one of the 5 locks inbetween the lift lock and Lakefield.

The lift lock is always fun no matter how many time we have gone though it. The engineering is fascinating as one tub of water goes down and the other up. Very easy locking!

Steve usually rides on the front if the locks aren't very far apart - and the clouds are covering the sun! It was an almost perfect travel day with a light breeze and cloud cover most of the day. Sever thunderstorms were predicted for the area but we manages to stay ahead of them - not even a drop of rain. How lucky we were.

Finally about 4:30 we arrived at lock 24 - Duoro. Never stayed here before but the shade looked great for the rest of the afternoon. We were the only boat below the lock for the night - very quiet and peaceful and no lights which make for a nice night!

Still very hot but a quick dip in the water takes care of that. The water is very clear - now I remember why we like boating up here so much :-)

This morning's quick trip of 3 miles got us to Lakefield by 10:30. In and settled for the day. We passed the Kawartha Voyager this morning. It's front end was folded up so it would fit into the locks - looked weird!

This is the trip my parents were on their way to take when my dad had a heart attack in Toronto. It was unfortunate as I think they would have really enjoyed it - especially dad.

Off to the store (groceries, hardware) and relax time :-)
