Thursday July 7: Ready to Leave Pirates Cove

Another productive day - we are just about ready to leave. Laundry is done, fuel tank is full, holding tank is empty and water tanks are full! First on the list this morning (since we didn't think the rebuild kit for the helm would be in until 5 pm) was to waterproof the canvas. Some of it was done in Orilla last July but the flybridge top was last done in the basement in Sagamore - so just over 2 years ago. During the last rainstorm we discovered that the top leaked like a sieve! Who knew?? Next on the list: rebuild the steering box - took lots of pictures as a reference :-)
The marina down the way called at 10:30 am to let us know our parts were in. Seems someone came in after us and ordered parts send overnight so the marina just added our order to the other one for overnight delivery - what a great guy!! We had turned our car in yesterday (that we had for 2 weeks) so one of the guys here at Pirates Cove ran us into town to pick up the parts. Overall it went well, the helm works great and no more fluid leaks!! Yea!!!
So you may wonder if the flybridge plastic actually fit. I am happy to report that we were very pleased with the results. There is some fitting left to do (using a hot glue gun) but overall it will work GREAT!! Guess the time and $200 for materials was worth it. I figure we made about $2,500 by not having someone make a custom fitted enclosure and this will work better for us anyway.
Tomorrow we will head toward Lake Ontario. The Oswego Canal which joins the Erie Canal to the lake is about 24 miles and 8 locks. Our plan is to go halfway and then position ourselves for crossing Lake Ontario on Sunday as favorable south winds are predicted. But then you know how they lie .....
