July 12: Kingston Mills Lock

We left Kingston about noon to head up the Rideau Canal. I was here in 1959 when my family traveled this canal system (7 of us) on a 21 foot boat! Now there are two of us on a 36 footer – quite the difference. The entrance is basically marked by a pair of closely set buoys just north of Kingston. We just missed timing the first set of flight locks (where you go from one lock directly into the next) but it wasn't too long before we were able to move on. All together there were 3 locks here so we stayed above the 3rd one. Nice place and a very nice display of the history of the Rideau Canal. It was originally built after the War of 1812 so the British would have some means of travel from Lake Ontario up to the interior of what is now Ontario in case the Americans decided to try to capture what is now Ontario. Whatever the reason, we were glad the British built it!

Here is a plaque that talks about the building of the canal and a view of the lock wall at which we were tied.
Off in the morning to Brewers Upper – where we can plug in and recharge batteries!
