Wednesday June 7: Well, That was a Short Trip!

Leaving Pirate's Cove
What a great start to the day! Up at 7 to work on the engine - two more things to try on a beautiful sunny but cool day.

Steve had spoken with Paul and Taylor from the marina here - they gave him a couple of suggestions to try.

First check the timing advance mechanisms in the distributor - seems ok. Then check the flapper valves in the carburetor. Mmm .. looks like one pair is stuck open.

Off we went to test it - SUCCESS!!

Traveling on the Erie Canal
Finished by 8 - might as well go out to breakfast as we couldn't return the rental car until 9. Back to the marina and off we went.

Just as we were pulling away from the dock Taylor came running down the dock to let us know they just received a notice from the NY Canal System that they just closed the Oswego Canal.

Guess all of that rainwater from the last 3 days had to go somewhere, but really? Closed?

So with the canal which leads to Lake Ontario closed there were basically two choices: stay longer at Pirate's Cove or move a whole 5 miles to the top of lock 1 of the Oswego Canal and wait until the canal is opened - estimated to be Saturday!!!

We chose the 5 mile trip. Nice day, sunny, a chance to read for a change instead trying to get ready to travel.

In the meantime, Craig and Karen had headed out ahead of us with the plan to meet in Oswego - at the end of the canal.

They had already passed through lock 1 when it was decided to close the canal. Their choice was to continue to lock 2 and tie up with no power OR turn around and go back through lock 1 and stay in Phoenix. A nice town with nice docks and power. Well, that was an easy decision!

Shortly after we were tied up, we spotted Rahn de Vous in the lock - headed our way.

They docked right in front of us.

The town of Phoenix has really gone all out with the facilities for boaters. With free docks, power, restrooms and shower, it will be a perfect place to wait out the reopening of the canal.

Meanwhile Steve walked around the area to see what he could find. The water flowing is crazy and no wonder why it was pushing us downstream so fast!

This cool house reminded Steve of the Adams family house.

Things will be perfect .... if we can get Karen to quit washing windows on their boat.

It's really hard to relax and read when people around me are working ......
