Friday June 9: It Was Like the Proverbial Chinese Fire Drill - Time to Go!!

A look at a map gives a better view of why it's important for us for the Oswego Canal to open.

Green is the approximate location of the Erie Canal which runs east and west across the upper part of the state of New York.

The red is the Oswego Canal - running north and south and connects the Erie Canal (the location of Pirate's Cove) and Lake Ontario.

No travel on Oswego Canal means no path to Lake Ontario and Canada!

But back to yesterday (Thurs). Steve and Craig unloaded their bikes and decided to take a ride around town. There really isn't much in this town other than the really nice dock! This from the 70 year old at one of the stores here :-)

Steve did spot a partially burned house on the trip. Which looked pretty shaky and somewhat dangerous actually. Sure there was a police tape but was that going to stop the kids???

Best thing they found was a Chinese restaurant! Steve brought back Subgum Wonton soup for lunch - absolutely perfect!!

The park like grounds near the dock was a nice place to sit and read. Cool in the shade but just right in a half-shaded area.

And the sunset was one to rival the ones at Banana Bay - of course there was no chance of a green flash but nice nonetheless :-)

This morning was again a cool sunny day. Perfect. So we took in the local breakfast place with Craig and Karen.

Breakfast special anyone? I love these small town diners!!  Especially ones where I can get mashed potatoes! Lovin' this place :-)

Karen and I waited outside trying to look like locals while the guys paid the bills. I don't think we fooled anyone ... but it sure was pleasant. Kind of like sitting around downtown Mayberry!

We weren't back to the boat for very long and received the email indicating the canal was open!!

Everyone was up and moving to get the boats repacked and ready to travel. Bikes back on, power chords unplugged and stowed, loose items put away and the three boats sitting at the dock were off!

Five locks and 4 hours later we were tied up in Oswego.

No major incidents. It was quite windy so between the wind and the current it was interesting going into some of the locks.

After last years trip of over 100 locks, I never thought I would be glad to be in a lock again but I sure was when we entered the first lock on the Oswego Canal!

Tomorrow: headed the 55 miles to Kingston, Ontario!! Lake is predicted to be less than 1 foot - just the kind of water we like to travel on :-)
