Within an hour after Peter and Cheryl
left, we took off as well. It seemed to be a mass exodus from Marsh
Harbor as we followed three trawlers and a sailboat out of the
harbor.
This was the first day in five that the
winds were dying down and the travel would be nice.
The waters continue to amaze us with
the differing colors of blue. The very light blue farthest from us is
shallow, sandy bottomed water. Definitely a good place to steer clear
of!
Our destination was Cormorant Cay. On
the chart and on ActiveCaptain, it appeared to be perfect for the
light northwest winds blowing. After trying twice to set the anchor,
we decided to move on to another spot. This time south of Snake Inlet.
. Nice sandy bottom with good holding!
Just what we like :-) No sooner had we anchored than Steve was in the
water. For two things: checking to see if the anchor was buried and
how well it was into the sandy bottom – and of course he had to
check out the rock islands nearby. Definitely a likely place to find
coral fish!
Successful snorkel with many
invertebrates and small colorful coral fish. Steve spotted Dory (a
blue tang) from Nemo and the nice anemone would have fit well also in
Finding Nemo :-) Fun underwater shelves as well.
It was a very peaceful evening with the
winds dying down as predicted – and from the west which was nice
as we were anchored against a western shoreline.
By the time we woke up in the morning
(about 7:15), there was no wind, no waves. Nothing to disturb the
amazingly clear water. It was quite easy to see the chain lying on
the ground next to the boat. My kind of calm :-)
I'm sure this is like one of those pictures that if taken from way above us would make it seem as though we were floating in the air.
Steve snorkeled again while I read my
book. On his trip he found a number of conch – two of which we
decided fit the description of “keepable”. The outer lip of the
shell has to be fully formed but we're not quite sure what that
means. Regardless, we thought we should error on the side of throwing
back any that we weren't sure of.
Good thing he watched the man at the
West End cleaning the conch at the roadside stand. He's ready with
the hammer to see if he can duplicate what he saw. And a nice job
done. I see fresh conch for dinner tonight!
We dropped the dinghy and rode into
Snake Creek. It was pretty disappointing though. Nothing like the
reviews we read on ActiveCaptain. Oh well, we checked out the
surrounding area anyway.
And of course we had to check out the
beach! Our own private, white sand beach. This must be what the
Bahamas are all about!
The picture left is for Cheryl: all we
were looking for was a beach where we could sit with our toes in the
water, our arses in the sand and a cold beer in our hand. It really
IS here :-) I missed her being here for this!
One final snorkel this afternoon and
there he is again – the lionfish that Steve saw yesterday. Supposed
to be good eating – where is the hand spear when you need it most!!
So ….. with nice weather and fair
winds, I may begin to like this place called the Bahamas :-) Maybe we'll
stay here another night ...
