Saturday April 12: Mmmm... This Doesn't Look Like the Pictures

There were a dozen other boats anchored here with us Thursday night and all were up and moving early Friday morning. Great Sale Cay anchorage could easily hold a hundred boats it's so big – which is a good thing because it's about the only protected anchorage within 30 miles.

Sunset yesterday morning was nice enough – lots of clouds with the sun coming through in and out of the day. This was the best part of yesterday!

As we made our way east, the plan A destination was Crab Cay – about 40 miles. The weather had other plans as we ended up stopping after 30 miles at Hawksbill Cay. The waves continued to build throughout the day and finally we called Surona and suggested we cut the day short. Agreed – they were getting beat up too.

Didn't even take any pictures there – too tired :-( Peter and Steve hopped in the dinghy and rode the mile or so to Foxtown in search of diesel. No luck – out of diesel today. Apparently that's pretty common here!

But today was another day, right? So our destination for tonight was Powell Cay. Check out the picture on the right of Powell Cay from the guide book! We are anchored at the big red X.

Mmmm... but it doesn't look like the picture. At all. Rain, wind, nasty. This is supposed to be such a nice place and Cheryl and I were ready with our bathing suits out so we could, according to Zak Brown, put our toes in the water and our arsses in the sand …. but not today. We're hoping it clears up for tomorrow! If it does, we'll hang around a while or maybe another night.

Otherwise it's on to Green Turtle Cay – about 15 miles away.

So far then we've traveled 120 miles from first reaching the West End last Saturday. Finally, I feel like we are getting somewhere! I don't think I was really aware of how far we would have to travel on this “Lake Erie” type of water before getting where we REALLY want to be!! Funny thing is the that the deepest water so far has been only 20 feet. One of these places where even if the boat sank we could still stand on the flybridge!

  1. Glad to hear you made it to Green Turtle. Where are you staying? Did you go for a mooring in the mooring field between BLuff HOuse and Green Turtle Coub or are you getting a dock?

The snow is finally melting here, and temp will hit 70 tomorrow in NH,
