Wednesday August 14: Shawanaga Island

The trip from Britt to our anchorage at Shawanaga Island put us offshore (so no protection from the winds on Georgian Bay) for about 10 miles. Fortunately we had left Britt shortly after 10 am (of course we needed to ride to St. Amant's for breakfast first :-) ) so the 15 knot winds from the West really hadn't had time to build much beyond 2 foot or so waves.

It was so awesome watching the waves crash up on the rocks that seemed to be everywhere! Fortunately the route is well marked and in the bright sunshine the markers were pretty easy to see.

What made it even easier for us was Peter and Cheryl led the way for the 30 mile trip to our destination – I needed only follow them and keep an eye on the chart plotter as a double check. Peter drives and watches the chart plotter while Cheryl uses the paper charts to continually verify their position.

There are so many rocks and twists and turns that it is too easy to miss a buoy and take the wrong path. All was good today.

It is so amazing to me that long ago boats were able to make their way through this area without the aid of the marked channels. This particular cut was just crazy narrow – I wasn't sure Deja Vu was going to fit with her 13 foot beam.

Definitely time for a slow passage :-)

We ended up at a very nice anchorage with great holding (which means there is either mud or sand on the bottom) and very well protected from the 20 knot winds which were due in later in the day – and continue on through the next day as well.

No sooner were we anchored – off Peter and Steve went to try out the fishing. Not a bad trip with a nice pike as the result!

I think it was a group (can a group be only two people? Or is it only a duo??) effort catching and actually landing the fish. Peter did the catching and since they had no net, Steve grabbed the pike around it's back and threw it in the dinghy. After that it was all bets off as the fish tried to make a getaway by flopping all over the place!

It's a gorgeous area (once again). Winds were expected to increase tomorrow – guess we will definitely stay another day :-)
