Thursday September 16: Nice Day Enjoying Grand Haven
We stayed in Grand Haven because of weather but it turned out to be a good day - which means we didn't get rained on as we biked around town! We hit NAPA looking for a generator oil filter (no luck), a hardware store for small things needed to hook up the TV system a better way, Meijer for a few groceries (and lunch as we were waiting to see if it was going to rain or not) and a TV antennae as I have given up trying to convince Direct TV to provide us with national local channels - the same way the readily provide them to RV'ers. Personally I think it is discrimination but they don't seem to agree - go figure :-)
And FINALLY we have boat cards! This seems like a weird thing but everyone has them and it really is kind of nice as we run into the same boats traveling off and on. Easier to remember who is who - plus it's fun to read their blogs. Just designed and ordered online and then stopped at the Staples store a 10 minute ride away to pick them up. Happens there was a West Marine store right next door. What more could you want?
This harbor, while really nice, is VERY bouncy at the dock. Steve has used all 6 of our lines to tie us off and added a seventh earlier in the day. The opening is straight out to the lake so the 8 foot waves rolling around today are surging into the harbor. Not uncomfortable but definitely noticeable. Dark clouds rolled in early this evening but didn't seem to bring any rain or storms - just wind.
The museum was also very good. No admission charge - which amazed us. Some really interesting exhibits on the history of the region - from fur trading to lumbering and finally farming as between 1830 and 1900 all of the trees were cut down.
Tomorrow is up and out. There is a salmon festival here over the weekend and no docking space is available. Tents were set up today in preparation. Plus it's time for us to move on anyway. Plan on 50 miles to South Haven, another 50 to New Buffalo and a final 35 to Chicago!
