Yes, Virginia - there is a south end of Lake Michigan! And we are are at it :-)
It was a beautiful day today in Grand Haven and Steve woke up early due to the wave surges still moving us all over the dock. He let me sleep until 7:15 or so and said it was time to get moving. So we left by 7:40 - but I was thinking: if the surges are still coming in the harbor, seems like the waves are still out there. There weren't though so on our way to South Haven (50 miles) we headed. Oddly enough there were still wave surges from the northwest (left over from yesterdays winds and 8 foot waves) that pushed us even though the winds were from the south.
Well, it was SO nice, that we decided that we should just skip South Haven and go on to New Buffalo. A change of heading indicated we had a total of about 90 miles. Long but doable. So Steve put two coats of finish on the floor because the water was so calm! When Steve called for a dock (this has become his job - which is appreciated :-)), the marina in New Buffalo had closed 2 days earlier. Another reset of our heading put us into Michigan City, Indiana at 8:15 pm - another 10 miles down the lake. Pulled in just after dark and was happy to be landed. A total of 103 miles for the day - 13 hour travel day. No wonder we're tired. I started out with lots of clothes and blankets but shed them as the day went on and warmed up a bit!
We saw our first sunset over water since Oneida Lake on the Erie Canal. This was more or less an everynight occurrence at the dock on East 55th St in Cleveland and we have missed them. Good thing we have Becky's picture in the aft cabin to remind us :-)
We could see Chicago through the haze just a short 35 miles to our west - tomorrow's destination!!!
