YEA! We made it to Florida today - not that you can tell from the temperatures. What would be balmy in Cleveland at this time is still just not right for boating! We saw a burned up boat being towed out of the marina just before we left - not sure what caused the fire but it was only the superstructure that was bad so it will be rebuilt. We left Dog River in bright and early with sunshine predicted for the whole day. It WAS out all day but the air temperature was in the 40's. We left Mobile behind as we crossed Mobile Bay: the last large body of water we will be on in a while.
It was about 30 miles to the start of the protected waters of the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway (GIWW). We'll follow this until it ends in a few hundred miles. THE marina in the area is LuLu's - Jimmy Buffet's sister's place. Guide book says it's not as good as it was when it was back on some small cutoff. Guess it got too commercial?? Evidence of Katrina is still seen as defunct marinas that couldn't afford to rebuild. We bypassed LuLu's as we wanted to make Walton Beach tomorrow. The weather turn really nasty Christmas day so we'll likely lay up for several days before moving on.
We saw a number of dolphin today - but weren't fast enough with the camera. They would swim straight for the boat and the dive under us! I was afraid we would hit them with the prop but Steve assures me no way would that happen. The sun was headed down by the time we arrived at our destination (52 miles today). We celebrated our arrival to Florida by using the new wine opener from Chris and Mary.
A toast to Florida!
