Tuesday October 5: Anchored Mile 48.8

Tonight will be our last night on the Mississippi River. We are anchored in a very sheltered channel called Little Diversion Channel. It's a great place except if it rains a bunch as this channel is actually the runoff from a town nearby - but it isn't supposed to so we'll be fine! Selah and Surona got settled and then we pulled up and tied to Selah. Steve is fixing chicken and dumplings for supper tonight - yea!!
When we woke up this morning (actually when Steve woke up - I was of course still sleeping :-) ) the fog was quite thick. It's getting pretty cold at night according to Bob so we waited until the sun rose a bit before taking off.
The scenery is still very interesting - the currents are increasing - the tows are getting bigger! We passed the largest one ever today: 6 wide and 7 long for a 42 barge total. They were empty so maybe that was why this tug was able to push so many against this current. Our record speed today was 13.3. Steve though pushed it to 14.5 to pass a tow. Who would have thought!!
Tomorrow is another long day: 48 miles on the Mississippi and a left hand turn up the Ohio River. We think we have a place to tie to (a big round thing anchored in the riverbed that is mostly for tows) about 17 miles up the river - and now against the current. But it should only be 1 - 2 mph. We'll go from an average speed of 11 mph to an average of 6 mph! Could be a long day :-)
