Friday October 1: Grafton - On the Mississippi!!

Yesterday was a long 60 mile day but very peaceful with only a few tow boats on the river. In the morning, we passed the island Surona and Selah were anchored behind (a mile or so south of us) as they opted not to tie to the barge with the giant cleats and then we proceeded downriver - making about 9 mph with the current.

The river was very calm and the sights interesting. The houses on stilts gave us an idea of how high the water can get! And the debris by the bridge gives a sense how much stuff can be in the water and floating when the river floods. It's almost a ho hum another eagle there are so many.

Last night was no power again as we tied to the Illinois Restaurant dock so we had a good excuse for going to the restaurant for both dinner last night and breakfast this morning!

Hills have begun to appear as we move farther south on the river and then FINALLY we saw the first signs of the Mississippi River! Our speed immediately went from 8.5 to 10 mph so was kind of wild for a while! Looking downriver is the actual junction of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers - we'll be on it tomorrow as we pass by St. Louis and the arch!!

We're staying tonight at the Grafton Marina - very nice place. Sort of a work stop with laundry and a GREAT trip to a Super Wal-Mart. Six of us in an extended cab pickup provided by the marina. Let me just say the back seats in those things are made for kids - not adults! Shortly after we arrived, the pirates came - fortunately no one was hurt. And we were worried about the Carribean :-)
