Sunday October 10: Green Turtle Marina - Grand Rivers

Yesterday and today were very relaxing days and it seemed everyone was ready to be tied up for a couple of days. We made two trips into Paducah - just about any kind of store was available. Walmart is a particular favorite and is often the only thing around (something sad about that). But regardless, Steve bought me an early Christmas present: a TV for the front cabin. We had talked about it many times as it is a comfortable place to sit. He then spent a good part of the day mounting it so it would be stable yet out of the way of the rope locker for the front anchor. I totally enjoyed the afternoon playing Zelda!
The Harvest Moon Festival was going on in town - we skipped the afternoon parade but attended the gathering in the park as well as the storytelling at the local performing arts theatre. It was quite interesting. The first gentleman did some readings of Paul Dunbar who we found out grew up in Dayton and was a quite well known African American poet and writer. When Steve was a senior at UD, he did some substitute teaching at Dunbar High School but we had no idea it was named after the poet. Apparently storytelling is a Kentucky tradition.
This is the marina we are at. It's one of the largest we have stayed at - many large permanent covered slips. Large boats and very large houseboats. It's a very nice place.
Grand Rivers was a fun town. Golf carts are street legal so it is very touristy. Sculptures, famous Patti's Restaurant and the Lazy Hog Inn were some of the highlights.
Tomorrow (Monday) is when Canada celebrates their Thanksgiving so since Peter and Cheryl didn't go home (Midland, Ont) for the holiday, we decided to have the holiday here. Everyone cooked something with Linda (Selah) cooked the cornish hens to perfection even as she worked around Jim changing the engine oil (which means the cabin floor was a giant hole!). It was truly a feast - complete with pumpkin pie and cool whip! We'll miss everyone as we being to split up toward the holidays.
Tomorrow we move on. There is a short canal that connects Barkley Lake with Kentucky Lake. It will take us about a week until we reach the end of this large lake - assuming we travel about 30 miles or so day.
