Wednesday March 6: In Search of the Green Flash

As the sun continues to move north on the horizon, it is almost to the point where it is setting over water rather than land.

This is when we see the green flash. Sadly I went back to the boat last night - and Steve stayed. I didn't think it would set over the water but it did - as long as you were halfway up the steps here at the point. One of the best he's ever seen ....

So I stayed tonight to see it but sorry - no flash tonight. No problem ..... perhaps tomorrow.

In the meantime, Steve has decided to finally refinish the steering wheel from the flybridge. He did the one at the main cabin helm close to 2 years ago but this one just never made the 'to do list.'

Now that we think all boat issues are completed (yeah like that ever happens!) I guess he decided it was time to start on things way down on the list!

The first step is always to clean the teak and make sure there isn't any other kind of finish left. This was definitely easier with the wheel being on the flybridge as it was often exposed to the sun and weather.

Once clean, then it's time for several coat of cetol. This is the same finish that's on most of the wood on the boat - both inside and out.

Using a rope to hang the wheel on the aft deck made it very easy to paint the entire wheel at a time.

Definitely looking good! Sand, recoat, dry, sand recoat, dry and maybe one more time just for good measure.

There was fishing trip to the ocean side yesterday with Joyce and Dave but the fishing was pretty bad. Nothing. Not even trolling which seems to always bring in a mackerel or two. We stopped and anchored for lunch on the way back in but I think it was really so Dave and Steve could catch a few small grunts just to say they didn't get skunked :-)

Today was sunny and cool. And now the wind is howling again from the NW - blows right into the marina. I'm sure tomorrow will be better .....
