Wednesday November 2: Somewhere in North Carolina!

The weather was great for a short run of 25 miles from Dowry Creek to a dock in a well protected and pleasant canal. It was decreed a day to rest for a good part of the day (by me - Steve was ready to keep moving). Turned out to be a good stop. We'll move on to Oriental, NC tomorrow.
Yesterday was spent again at Dowry Creek as the Palmico River and Sound were pretty nasty (so the locals told us based on the weather/wind prediction). You can see what large bodies of water they are. The Nuese River (lower left corner of the chart above) is the widest river in the US so it also can be quite rough. We'll cross it the day after tomorrow. The first picture is a view of the marina from the upper deck. The owners bought this marina after he retired from the Marine Corps and the flag flies daily. The third picture is a sailboat that is now sitting on shore thanks to Irene. It had been anchored in the small creek above the marina. Not exactly sure what is going to happen to it. It's not like there are any roads to it or anything!
Yesterday was a work day. It was time to put the new battery charger in and get it going. The old charger only put out 17 amps so it took a long time to recharge the batteries when we were anchored out and using the generator. As always, it took much longer than we thought it would. Two trips to town in the courtesy car, crawling under the floor to run some new wires, crunching up in awkward positions to install the charger wiring. All in all doing things not normally required when living on the boat. Perhaps that is why I am so stiff this morning! Steve of course helped but couldn't do some things he normally would have. We finally finished it up at 9 pm (took a break for the boater's get to gether at 5:30). No wonder I wanted to have a short day today :-)
The marina's dog, Roscoe, reminded us very much of Fozzi. He loved to just sit around on the dock watching the coming and goings. John said he loves to be on the boat and with some encouragement would have jumped aboard as we were leaving!
The dock for tonight is actually a fishing boat company's dock. The best part is (other than it being $0.40 a foot including electric so $14.40 for us) is they also sell seafood! Talk about fresh - from the boat to the table. This rather interesting boat passed by the dock but we're not sure exactly why it has the elevated seat/steering but it was fun.
Steve bought a flounder and some scallops so the flounder will be dinner tonight and the scallops go into the freezer. With time to really cook, it's going to be scalloped oysters for 'before dinner' Steve had bought some oysters a few days ago and they need to be cooked. Hey, if we have to ... we just have to! I'm sure not as good as Mom used to make (which by the way she only made when Dr. Tom came home for Thanksgiving!) but I am confident they will be excellent none the less :-) Here is the recipe he is using:
