July 9th: Heading to Lovesick

We left Lakefield and traveled to Young's Point where we just relaxed for the day. I went up to the general store where we know there is a lady who makes Chelsea (cinnamon) buns. They are the best! Not on our diet but we make an exception here. We know, to get some, you need to order them the day before. A nice place to spend a night, and Chelsea rolls for breakfast. Couldn't be better. Unfortunately, she hadn't planned to start making them this season until the following weekend. She remembered me and checked her supplies and said she just couldn't make any for us. Saved us from ourselves!

The next morning I made breakfast on a picnic table and we enjoyed a beautiful morning. Then we headed through Stoney Lake, a beautiful lake due to all the granite islands, hence the name! Really need to watch where you are going. The depths can go from 80 feet to 2 feet very quickly. The lake has an interesting history. You can learn more here. Info on Stoney Lake.

St. Paul's Church on Stoney Lake

We continued on past St. Paul's Church. It is on an island accessible only by boat and has been here serving the cottagers for many years.

While cruising, we spotted a loon with two chicks. It is very difficult to tell the males from the females and both spend time guarding the chicks. Often when we spot loons they will dive under the water. However, when they have chicks that aren't old enough to dive yet they just stay with the chicks and swim away. That gave us an opportunity for a picture. Its always fun to see the chicks. These are getting pretty large. We saw some earlier this year that were really tiny. We didn't get a picture because we weren't close enough and didn't want to alarm them by getting closer.  Listen to the loons.

It is wonderful to listen to the loons calling in the evening. There were several calling the night we spent at Lovesick.

Stopped to try to catch some perch along the way at a spot we know they hang out. Caught a very large sunfish and one other good sized sunfish but not really enough for supper. Maybe next time.

It was getting quite hot so we headed to Burleigh Falls. Fortunately, at the bottom of the lock there is shade. We spent a very enjoyable evening tied to the lock wall in the shade. We like to stay at Burleigh Falls in part because there is a great breakfast place a short bike ride away. They typically have interesting art work for sale. This year it was a life sized, artificial moose head, It was sort of like a giant stuffed animal but quite lifelike. You can own it for $599 Canadian currency. That makes it about $450 U.S. currency with the exchange rate. We like the exchange rate!

After breakfast we moved on to Lovesick Lock. We stayed above the lock because it was again quite warm and there was a nice breeze at the top but not the bottom. Lovesick is one of my  favorite places because I can usually count on catching fish here. The fishing was bad on our way down due to very high rushing water. This time, on the way back up, there was no water moving over the dam at all! You can see in the picture how calm the water was.  :(  Very bad for fishing. I caught a few small ones but that was all. However, because the water was so calm, I did have fun seeing a muskie, that was about 4 feet long, swimming by. The water was very clear and I got a very good look at his huge mouth. No way I could have landed that fish even if it was interested.

Since the fishing wasn't productive, I decided to complete a project. I had bought some wire earlier because we decided to improve the wiring for our solar panels by letting us move them further away from the boat to reach the sunshine. We were using the solar panels quite a bit and they work great, but of course, only if we can place them in the sun. Sometimes that means moving them pretty far from the boat. The new wiring works great and really helps.

Trevi squeezed behind the couch cushion
Trevi turned and facing back!
We continue to be entertained from afar by Rebecca's dogs. The latest pictures show where Trevi likes to hang out. She seems to love being tucked behind the couch cushions. Maybe it makes her feel secure? Whatever, pretty entertaining.

Wild raspberry blossoms.

The blog flower last time was a wild raspberry blossom. Not only are the blossoms pretty but the berries are great!
