Our detour to Chattanooga is over as we are back to Grand Haven marina on the Yellow River. The two-week 500 mile (round trip) didn't get us any farther south but we are definitely glad that we took the time to go.
The Tenn-Tom was actually first proposed in 1792! But as things usually go, it wasn't until 1971 that congress ok'd the funds to begin a canal that would connect the Tennessee River to the Tombigbee River - cutting the 1500 mile trip from the Gulf to the Tennessee by half plus the advantage of not having to buck the currents of the Mississippi for those tows headed upstream.
The Tenn-Tom opened in 1985 with a total cost of two billion dollars and more dirt moved than was moved to build the Panama Canal! So we have 450 miles to go to Mobile with the goal being to be there by November 15th or so. Even though it is getting colder, it is amazing to me that it's November 2nd and we don't have to pull the boat out for the winter!
No pictures today - nothing new :-) It's rainy and cloudy - a very good day to sit at a marina! (Steve's edit-good day for Linda to sit at the marina while I worked; met with a local expert to learn more about navigating the Tenn-Tom, helped our Canadian friends make arrangements to get their boat pulled out and the bottom repainted, changed the engine oil & cleaned up some oil around the generator. We'll need to figure out where the oil is coming from but that's enough for today. Meanwhile Linda made good progress on her video game.)
